  • Childcare Network of Evanston | YTC

Introducing The Childcare Network of Evanston As a leader in the Evanston early childhood community and an Evanston Cradle to Career partner, CNE has played a major role in the development and implementation of a variety of programs all focused on ensuring that all children in our community have a Strong Start to Kindergarten. CNE WEBSITE Home Visiting Program at CNE YTC has been asked to help participants in CNE’s Home Visiting Program which is a Head Start/Early Head Start program that serves families with young children ages birth to five through weekly home visits and twice-monthly group socializations. Each eligible family is paired with one of CNE’s Parent Educators/Home Visitors, who use research-based curricula (Parents As Teachers and My Teaching Strategies) to support parents in becoming their child’s first teachers. How YTC is Helping Some families in the home visiting programs have struggled to have consistent access to the internet. So YTC is making sure that these identified clients receive our support with either Laptops or desktops so they can work from home, and have better access to the digital community. • About Dave Finkel | YTC

The George Bernard Shaw quote “Some people see things as they are and ask, why? I dream things that never were and ask, why not?” infuses David’s dream, “Imagine a world where young people use the promise of technology to bring opportunity and hope to themselves, their community and the world. It is time to pass the Torch to a new generation!” As its founder and president, David gives vision and passion to Youth Technology Corps. David Finkel YTC President & Founder My Story “Let the word go forth from this time and place, to friend and foe alike, that the torch has been passed to a new generation …” John F. Kennedy’s 1961 inaugural address inspired David Finkel, beginning a lifelong desire to make a difference. After an undergraduate degree in Philosophy from the U of I, Chicago (1968) he taught in Chicago Public Schools until June 1973, the last three years teaching English at Lane Tech High School. Starting in 1970, Mr. Finkel volunteered in Chicago area civic and government causes, serving on the board of the Independent Voters of Illinois, among others. He was a “grass-roots” political/community organizer who ran several local and statewide races for public office serving Illinois State Government in several positions including Manager of Chicago and north half of IL State Government Real Estate (owned and leased). In the late 70’s, David turned his attention to building personal assets. Focusing on national real estate trends and entrepreneurial strengths, he became president of a company developing a 113-unit condominium in suburban Washington D.C. in 1981. By 1986, Mr. Finkel’s companies and partnerships had acquired more than $40 million in real estate assets in six states and employed 130 people. David became acquainted with the Center for Excellence in Education (CEE); an international education program for gifted teenagers based in Northern Virginia in 1986. He has helped CEE in many ways including chaperoning American students to India (1987) and serving on the Advisory Board for one of its programs. The 1986 Tax Law changes and Savings & Loan crisis led to a failure of his companies. By 1989, David returned to Chicago. Absorbing the lessons of his successes and failures he used his experience in deal-making, business, politics and education to develop a complex system, an integrated, adaptable, local model for change with a global reach. David has spent 30 years developing, testing and improving this system, known as Youth Technology Corps. We are now connected to the rest of the world. With a global pandemic and its political and economic crises, helping struggling communities, their schools and youth is daunting. Yet, with the acceleration of knowledge, especially of complex systems and the digital revolution, many individual problems have working solutions. The key is turning the multiple solutions into a single, affordable, integrated one. The idea starts with self-sustaining technology centers (clubs) where youth learn technology by serving their community including donating refurbished technology and teaching others before starting their careers. The club becomes an information and communication hub for a community, an engine for growth as the youth provide a valuable service to others. And the idea grows as successful clubs bring help to other communities to start their own club. The vision: YTC clubs become a self-supporting, ever-growing interconnected web of formerly struggling communities across the planet. This concept forms the philosophical basis for the Youth Technology Corps (YTC). Starting with teens and technology, YTC begins at the crossroads of change in society. The first prototype computer program started at the Cambodian Association of Illinois in 1995 with a simple thought: Teens can learn about technology by rebuilding discarded computers that they donate to their community. That first program has become the Youth Technology Corps, after-school programs in Chicago communities and just ready to spread. YTC started bringing computers to Durango, Mexico in 2000 expanding to two-way exchanges in 2004. YTC has held annual 1-week over-night computer camps. In the process of learning to work with and on computers, YTC students have donated thousands of computers and taught classes in Chicago, New Orleans, North Carolina, Missouri, Galveston and Durango, Mexico. In 2018, YTC youth began learning and then teaching robotics. And by the summer of 2020, two months after total school shutdowns, YTC students were teaching robotics hands-on, virtually, to other youth. YTC’s basic principles: 1. Regardless of how little you have, when you help someone else, you are not poor; 2. You can learn valuable skills through helping others; 3. Giving youth the opportunity to help with the solution helps both community and youth, reducing cost; and 4. Emerging technologies make rapid, dramatic progress possible. The goal: Use these tools to give youth a future and connect people so their collective creativity can find new solutions to old problems. Contact I'm always looking for new and exciting opportunities. Let's connect. David Finkel david.finkel@ytcorps.org

  • LEADERSHIP COMMITTEE | YTC

Leadership Committee Honored Graduates In 2020, in the midst of the pandemic. David Finkel reached out to recently graduated YTC Club leaders who volunteered to lead our current students to become teachers of content to facilitate the launch of a virtual summer camp focused on Arduino Robotics. After the success of the summer camp, it was clear that a team was needed to lead future endeavors, and thus the Leadership Club was formed. . YTC alumni are pursuing or have received technology-related degrees at colleges and universities including the University of Illinois, Illinois Institute of Technology, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Binghamton University, Stanford University, Northern Illinois University, DePaul University, and many others. Owen Daley Served as the Co-President of the ETHS YTC club. Since graduation, I have served in the YTC Leadership club and helped organize and manage the YTC summer camps in 2020-2022 I am currently studying Mathematics at the University of Vermont. To be completely honest, I don't have a clear idea of what exactly I am working towards, but I think something like this could be good: I have always had an interest in technology and mathematics, and through YTC I have developed a goal of providing education and resources to those who are not as fortunate as I am. I love interacting with our students, parents, and partner organizations about the services that we provide, and the creativity that our students can come up with because of these opportunities that they may not have otherwise had Juan Zarco Leadership Committee Chair Juan embarked on his journey in technology by signing under a "maybe" column that automatically signed him up for a Technology Service Internship class. Although, frightening at first, it opened new worlds that Juan would have never discovered otherwise. That same feeling has stayed throughout the journey and is a feeling he wishes to convey with anyone he is able to support. Juan Zarco is now currently a student at the University of Illinois at Chicago studying Computer Engineering and a Youth Leader with YTC refurbishing computers and leading in YTC's Summer Camps. Miles Daley Served as the Co-President of the ETHS YTC club. Since graduation, I have served in the YTC Leadership club and helped organize and manage the YTC summer camps in 2020-2022 "I am currently studying Mathematics at the University of Vermont. I love interacting with our students, parents, and partner organizations about the services that we provide, and the creativity that our students can come up with because of these opportunities that they may not have otherwise had." Jose Ariza Apart of YTC since 2015, I have aided in the creation of curiculum and taught in the Robotics program in 2020-2023 "I have just graduated from Morton College with an associates degree in Computer Information Systems and I am on the crossroads of furthering my knowledge and skills in the computer field and/or entering the job market. My dream that I want to accomplish within these next 5 years would be to develop and release my own video game. Being apart of YTC's robotics team has been a great learning opportunity for me and I hope to continue helping and teaching for the foreseeable future." Christian Zamudio "I am currently a student at the University of Illinois at Chicago, majoring in Electrical Engineering. Through my involvement with YTC I found even more passion in pursuing a career in an engineering field. YTC provided me with the tools to explore robotics in new ways and now, to be teaching other students the basics of robotics is amazing. As a child, I loved disassembling and repairing things, from my favorite video game consoles to computers. Over the years, my fascination with Halloween has grown, and now, I enjoy fixing old animatronics and even creating my own scary props." Connects YTC CONNECTS COMMUNITIES "YTC Connects" is our effort to close the inequity gap exacerbated by the digital divide in both local and international communities. We do so by teaching our students to refurbish computers as well as training others to repeat the process under our supervision. Our Charter Clubs or affiliates find deserving families or organizations and then find the resources necessary to put technology into the hands of people who are left behind. YTC CONNECTS Without ever charging for a program or an experience, over 2,500 YTC students have refurbished and donated over 4,000 computers to 40+ communities in North America Recent Donations Families of the Tepehuanes Municipality in the Mexican state of Durango welcome YTC as they arrive with 100 computers to donate. Spotlight On Impact The destinations below represent some of our efforts to Bridge the Digital Divide around the globe, across the United States, and right here at home in the Chicagoland area. ETHS Connects Evanston YTC Connects North Carolina Thanks to Office Max Morton East Connects Cicero ETHS Connects New Orleans Benton House Connects Back of the Yards , Pilsen , Bridgeport YTC Connects Chicago's Southside At the heart of the matter. YTC has been a force for good, serving and connecting communities, both locally and internationally. The digital divide is not just a policy or infrastructure issue. It is a social justice matter in that lack of access to technology disproportionately affects people of color, low-income individuals, and families.
